Early morning on Thursday he will meet Hungary’s Defence Minister Imre Szekeres, then the President of the Republic of Hungary, László Sólyom, and finally Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. Mr. de Hoop Scheffer will hold a speech early afternoon at the plenary session of the NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting.
The meetings’ purpose is the informal discussion of key issues like the Alliance’s transformation agenda, which aims at making NATO more flexible and effective. Decisions however, are only expected to be taken next year.
The NATO-Georgia Commission will hold its first session at ministerial level also in Budapest. The allied ministers will be joined by 2 invitees, the Defence Ministers of the aspiring Albania and Croatia.
On Thursday and Friday they will also meet in ISAF format with non-NATO troop contributing nations.
The Hungarian capital will host nearly 700 official guests and hundreds of journalists on the2-day ministerial meetings. The official programs will finish on Friday, October 10, at 12 noon.
